The Guardian have said it is more addictive than Eastenders and after a few days of listening / watching him in his Liverpool home, I am HOOKED! Wiley is either insane or a genius, don’t know which it is but it’s TV gold. We love Wiley, end of.
Katy B has taken the UK by storm with her new release, ‘Louder‘, so it is only fair that we say well done to Katy, Geeneus and the whole Rinse family, you SMASHED IT! I like ‘Louder’ as a track, not so keen on the Roska remix, but it is the flip side to this record that does it for me ‘Katy On A Mission‘ (as posted by J Money in July) but the strongest of the Katy B arsenal has to be the Geeneus record, ‘As I‘. Big riddim last year, still one of the strongest funky records about in my opinion. You have probably heard all of these tunes before (definitely in fact) but I personally wanted to pay my respects to the people we have watched come up finally blow! BIG UP.
This track has creeped into my set over the last couple of weeks and I love it! Original Face is a new artist to me, please feel free to correct me on this, and this release comes out on my favourite label of 2010, L2S. They are putting out a lot of records at the moment, some not so good but the rest are amazing! They seem to target 2-Step / Future Garage (or just just bloody Garage) producers and have really focused their energies on being THE label of the revolution. Some amazing work going on there, please keep it coming. Have a listen to this…
Oh Gosh! Not much else to say about the antics of this particular Notting Hill Carnival reveler, other than that she’s been slackly studying the art of the Dancehall Queen. Fortunately my eyes were saved from any such sights at this years Carnival. At this point I would normally say enjoy, but I don’t quite feel it to be appropriate for this one. No offense if this is your cup of tea though
The outstanding Pariah has followed up his debut single with a double vinyl EP entitled Safehouses on R&S Records. You can listen to a twelve minute preview mix of the tracks over on his myspace. Here is one track, Slump, featured on MAH’s Radio 1 show. Say No More.
Now this is a distinctive track if ever there were one. I’m not too hot about the vocal version but the dub totally sums up the direction in some early house productions that spawned the garage sound. You gotta love those spooky synths and swinging drums. It was produced by a chap named Miles Morgan who also had some success in the early 90′s with his efforts under the Mount Rushmore moniker. Check it, it’s worth a bump.
Adam over at Things I’ve Seen asked us to do a little interview, and we think it came out alright! You can read / listen here: GET SOME DROP THE TRUTH. Cheers Adam.
Manchester MC, Skittles looks to build on his début album Two Pints of Brandy and a Packet of Skittles with his follow up effort Poor With £100 Trainers and has released this free EP to get the buzz going. His strength is painting a picture with words and that’s why I think his style works better over hip hop than dubstep, which gives him a platform to flow over without drowning out what he’s saying. Definitely worth a listen.
You can’t seem to open a newspaper or watch the TV, without seeing an info-graphic at the moment. I recently came across this poster which I’m guessing was included with Tempa’s Roots of Dubstep Compilations. You might look at the sound some of these artists are pushing now, and question where they’ve been placed or who they’ve been linked to, but if you rewind back to ’06, I think most of them match up. The credits are on the on the other side, so we can’t see them, but like most of Ammunition/Tempa/FWD/Rinse work, I’m guessing they’re the work of Give Up Art.
Not a lot needs to be said about this really, two legends in the UK dance scene have teamed up in Wiley and MJ Cole and here is a clip of their work, a VERY good look if you ask me. Check it out.
With over 75,000 plays in under 12 hours (and counting) this is something worthy of a listen. It’s trippy. Quiet beautiful and apparently it’s Justin Beiber at negative warp speed. That’s right. According to the label it’s the teeny boppers track “U Smile” slowed down by 800% to an epic 35 minute Sigur Ros-esque soundscape. You have to sample it to get the full effect of the hype.
My favourite track from Giggs’ album Let Em Ave It has received the video treatment. A slickly shot number starring Idris Elba, who some of you may recognise as ‘Stringer’ from The Wire.
A fair bit of what we talk about on here stems from the sphere of Garage, so we thought it would be nice to tip our hat to the roots from time to time and drop a few classics for your reference. First up is a sexy little number from NY house legend Victor Simonelli masquerading as NY’s Finest. “Do you feel me” was originally released in 1993 and helped lay the trail to what many call ‘Garage’.
