It’s been a good 6 months since I’ve been this excited by an artist. As seems to be the way these days, Rudi Zygadlo hails from Glasgow, and his futuristic, choral, poppy take on electronica/dubstep is unlike anything I’ve heard before. Since I got his album ‘Great Western Laymen’ through from the people at Planet-Mu I’ve been unable to listen to anything else. Check out the lead single from the album ’Resealable Friendship’ below, and not can you pre-order the album here, you can also stream the whole thing. Don’t miss out on this one.
I have been a huge fan of Scuba’s for a while now and not just for his deep, Dub-Tenchno sound but also for his label(s), Hot Flush. They have really been pushing the boundaries in the last year or two with releases from Pangaea, Sigha, TRG & 2562, Untold, Mount Kimbie and most notably, Hot Flush gave us the debut Joy Orbison record, Hyph Mngo.
Scuba has himself released a string of EP’s in the twelve months, my favorite being “Nagative’ for the “Speak EP’. Have a listen:
I think that the new album ‘Triangulation’ is a real step forward for Scuba. It feels like there is a lot more energy in these tracks and that he has introduced some new styles of production on this, his second album. Overall I think the album is great, tracks like ‘Minerals’ remind me of early Four Tet (something straight out of ‘Rounds’) using samples of running taps to create some atmosphere in the intro of the track. ‘Lights Out’ has a sound of it’s own, nodding firmly to warm, early, house mixed with a dash of Dub-Tenchno and total rhythmic genius. The track below, ‘You Got Me’, is a great example of Scuba’s work and is one of the best at creating a hypnotic rolling sound along side people like Pangaea, Peverelist, 2562 and Martyn.
I have a lot of time for this album and think you should give it a go. You can check the album out digitally or on vinyl out here: http://www.boomkat.com/item.cfm?id=285258.
Back on the planet! I’ve been away from here for far too long. Mad busy in the real world.
Here’s a really heavy remix of Litte Jinder (who?) by US producers 12th Planet & Flinch
Super-label Numbers, rising out of the ashes of Wireblock, Stuff and Dress2Sweat have a brilliant new website built by the boys over at Remote Location. They’ve also made all of their previous podcasts available, including Spencer’s mix for Mary Anne Hobbs last year, which contains a bunch of exclusives and forthcoming tracks.
To be honest, the only things that have been on my iPod this month have been tracks produced by J Dilla, the Streets of Rage 2 soundtrack and Deadboy’s R’n'B mix he did for Bruk Magazine – if R’n'B isn’t your thing at least check out Deadboy’s reworkings of Cassie’s ‘Official Girl’ and Ashanti’s ‘The Way That I Luv U’ forthcoming on Well Rounded.
We got the interview Fact got the mix. So, read this then go cop Fact 135.

The first of our interviews and promo mixes for GET SOME 003 comes from the formidable DRM (no, not digital rights management, DANCING ROBOT MUSIC)! These boys are pure fire, selling out KOKO and The Coronet and are sure to set the party on alight. Check out our exclusive mix by them below.

GET SOME…earplugs because we’re about to spank your drums.
No doubt about it, one of my favorite Techno producers of the last decade. This guy has been tearing up Berlin for longer than I’ve been interested and if you follow my mixes, you will no doubt of heard a track or two his thrown in! Of all places, I was with some work colleagues in Copenhagen last night and I heard a bizarre retake on The XX’s VCR. Again, all of you will guys will knoe that I have been plugging that band for over a year now (cheers Darkstar!) and there have been many remixes in the last few months, but I thought this was a little different. Check it out…
I don’t really want to say too much about this other than, I BLOODY LOVE IT! The whole EP is stunning and the remixes do the original justice, for once. Have a listen, beautiful! By the way, the Warrior 1 remix ain’t bad either!
Everyone who went to see Tim Burton’s self-indulgent Alice in Wonderland said the highlight was the trailer for Tron 2, or Tron Legacy as Disney are calling it. I have fond memories of the first film. I guess it was to me what Star Wars was to earlier generations.. It had a brilliant bleakness to it. The never-ending dark landscapes, ominous music and characters you cared about. Rare for Disney. The new one looks like it has potential but I don’t want to over hype and then be made to eat my own words. It deserved mentioning that Daft Punk are doing the soundtrack which I think is a good thing. There have been many a ‘leaked track!!!!!!’ on the net, but I think only one of them is legit. Roll on December!
Of all the ‘leaked tracks!!!!’, whether official or not, this one is my favourite.
Onto more musical matters but keeping with the futuristic theme. Peverelist is the latest artist to mix for Fact magazine. There is no tracklist, just music, including what sounds to me like unreleased tracks from the man himself.
If that’s your thing then be sure to check out rising Manchester based producer xxxy.
This one is from James Blake who didn’t even have a record out this time last year but I expect his name to be on everyone’s lips in 2010. Here is a clip from his latest EP which is out on Hessle Audio (a personal fave of mine), unfortunately, YouTube was the only place I could find it. Apologies if the quality isn’t great, have a listen!
My boy Jonny has pulled a spectacular mix out of the bag, soooooo good I just had to share. Jonny is one of the most undercover guys, he used to work closely with legend Zed Bias in Manchester, collaborating on a record label and club night, DUB SPOT. But you never hear him or see much of him, he quietly gets on with shit and smashes it with tracks like the one below! Quite admirable really considering the amount of self promotion we are all guilty of. He has got untold amount of productions, remixes and mixes up his Soundcloud and also runs Jus’ Listen Recordings which features tracks by Jonny and others well worth listening to! Keep up the good work JM, we need more people like you… Here it is peeps. Happy listening…
