It’s October, things shouldn’t be like this, shorts, tee’s and bubbly house music still very much on the menu. Normally at this time of the year I have settled into some deep house or techno and the club nights I attend are a little cosier, a bit darker. So, seeing as the weather doesn’t want to play ball I am going to rebel, and here’s my backlash to it all, Dexter‘s latest release on Clone Records, ‘Great Northern Diver‘. T.H.I.N.G. is unbelievably good, my favourite on the release, the track feel most correct for what should be happening at this time of year. The dubby basslines remind me of 2562 and Martyn circa 2008, the warmth of the vocals nod at 90′s R&B, which isn’t a new thing, but the combination is fresh. Have a listen below.
For those of you who have been reading the site for a long time you will know I am a massive fan of 2562, in any of his many guises. From A Made Up Sound to his namesake, Dave Huisman, everything he touches is gold! A true mix of sounds, one to appreciate no matter where you are coming from. He has just released his latest album ‘Fever‘ and I would highly recommend it, have an extended listen to the preview below. Peace.
2562 is dropping his latest release on his brand new label, Doubt. It’s a two track single that fuses his A Made Up Sound production style with vintage 2562 hypnosis! I personally love Dave Huisman’s work in whatever form and this releases doesn’t disappoint. Check it out.
Always got time for Dave Huismans in whatever format he produces under. His early 2562 stuff was super progressive and everything he has put out under the ‘A Made Up Sound‘ moniker hasn’t failed to keep pushing his amalgamation of sounds. The Dutch producer is a favourite of mine and will be for a long time if he continues to make records like this one! Listen to ‘Rear Window‘ below, plus a classic 2562 track, ‘Walkover‘.
We are now getting together an almost mid year review of the last twelve months and will be asking friends of GET SOME to give their TOP 5 DJ’s producers/DJ’s with a little example to boot… first up the one and only DARK ARX.
Frank Martiniq – My Visor
Raises the dub techno bar – a supremely heavy track.
Asusu – Small Hours
Strutting hybrid of techno hypnosis and UK bass.
Binary Sequence – Below The Ice
Distressed, heartbreaking dub electronica.
A Made Up Sound – Untitled
Crushed Drexciya-step from 2562′s evil twin.
Caribou – Sun
Pysch-pop alchemy from Dan Snaith – great album.
The new DARK ARX release, Blood Vein, is out now and you can check it out here! It has been getting rave reviews and as followers of GET SOME will know, we are lovin’ it, have a listen…
I have been a huge fan of Scuba’s for a while now and not just for his deep, Dub-Tenchno sound but also for his label(s), Hot Flush. They have really been pushing the boundaries in the last year or two with releases from Pangaea, Sigha, TRG & 2562, Untold, Mount Kimbie and most notably, Hot Flush gave us the debut Joy Orbison record, Hyph Mngo.
Scuba has himself released a string of EP’s in the twelve months, my favorite being “Nagative’ for the “Speak EP’. Have a listen:
I think that the new album ‘Triangulation’ is a real step forward for Scuba. It feels like there is a lot more energy in these tracks and that he has introduced some new styles of production on this, his second album. Overall I think the album is great, tracks like ‘Minerals’ remind me of early Four Tet (something straight out of ‘Rounds’) using samples of running taps to create some atmosphere in the intro of the track. ‘Lights Out’ has a sound of it’s own, nodding firmly to warm, early, house mixed with a dash of Dub-Tenchno and total rhythmic genius. The track below, ‘You Got Me’, is a great example of Scuba’s work and is one of the best at creating a hypnotic rolling sound along side people like Pangaea, Peverelist, 2562 and Martyn.
I have a lot of time for this album and think you should give it a go. You can check the album out digitally or on vinyl out here: http://www.boomkat.com/item.cfm?id=285258.
A great mix, definitely worth a listen. I was blown away at the back end of last year when London based producer Greymatter dropped his ‘When I Was Lost / Grot’ EP, and have been loving his work ever since. Expect big things in 2010, and who knows, maybe more of Greymatter here on GET SOME…? Look out for his forthcoming Album, ‘Mind Over Matter’, due to be released at the back end of next month.
