A man I rated very highly a couple of years ago, someone I still rate now, has come out of the wilderness with some real fire. Pangaea returns on Hessle Audio with this 2 track single which is quite dark and techy but also has the stamp of other classic Pangaea tracks. ‘Inna Daze‘ is my favourite of the two, using skippy drums, air horns, a nice cut up vocal and a Berghain influenced bass line. Maybe he’s been listening to Dark Arx, who knows? ‘Won’t Hurt‘ is a much more classic Dubstep track, it’s a solid piece of production but not necessarily an exciting one. None the less, as I said, I am still a fan of his, mostly for his 2009 and pre 2009 productions and hopefully this is the first of many more releases from Pangaea this year. Have a listen to the release plus a couple of my past favourites.
Reggae Roast kick off the New Year with a new EP release and launch party at their continued home of The City Arts and Music Project Basement. This release is particularly special to us as it features a dub techno remix from GET SOME affiliate Dark Arx. VERY DREAD.
Dark Arx put together a new podcast for the WNYU radio station which was broadcasting across New York and neighbouring states on Friday at 7pm EST. The show is EKG and its host Zane Brzezinksi is clearly up for challenging the norms of East Coast Friday night FM radio. I love the spectrum of sounds that he has put together for this and recommend you get involved! Check it.

Out on R&S, Untold has stepped it up with a serious Detroit inspired Techno double! Late night business on this one I think, probably hear it on the next Dark Arx podcast. This release is at the opposite end of the spectrum to the record he recently collaborated on with Roska but in my opinion, that is a good thing. I was talking to Kashmir Kid yesterday about the versatility of producers and how many producers never get to release the stuff they are into or making but doesn’t fit their profile. Untold seems to be bucking this trend with real versatility within’ his records. If you go back through his catalogue of releases you will find a real journey of sounds and music, one which hasn’t been hindered by being pigeon holed in to one genre of music. I am very up for this, shame there aren’t more producers doing the same. Check it out.
I am really happy that this EP is finally coming out, it is something I have been waiting on for a long time. Gerry Read (or Gerry R) is a new artist releasing his first EP, ‘Patterns’, on the ever experimental label ‘Dark Arx Recordings‘. I have been following Gerry for just over a year and it was back in the summer when I heard another of his tracks on Soundcloud, ‘Seraphim’, that I got really excited. I emailed him and got chatting, it was one of best sounding demos I had laid my ears on and without any mastering or polishing it seriously blew me away. I put him in touch with Dark Arx as the track was very dubby, very deep with a skippy 2-Step feel, a perfect fit for the artist and the label in my opinion.
Since then Dark Arx has really looked after this guy and they have got Gerry’s first EP in VERY good shape. It was around this time last year that Joy Orbison was getting some serious hype from the scene, the industry and fans alike (myself included), one of the most eagerly anticipated dance records that I can remember, so when I say ‘Patterns’ could go 12 rounds with ‘Hyph Mngo’ you might be a bit skeptical but have a listen, it is the stand out track on the EP and it might just surprise you as to how good it is. I have also heard what is coming next, trust me when I say this, Gerry Read is going to blow, 2011 will be his, along with some of the back end of 2010.
What’s your background as a music maker? (when did you start getting interested in writing/producing, tell us about your previous ambient/drone work, etc). I started off teaching myself to play the guitar and drums in my bedroom. I was always into loads of different bands and never really liked anything electronic. It was when my brother showed me Bad Company, Andy C, Dillinja, & Shy FX where I first started to get into electronic stuff. It wasn’t long after that until I got my first set of turntables, where I started mixing ragga/old skool jungle. I was getting well into it and played at a few house parties my brother had at ours. Then we moved to Australia where we lived from a suitcase for 6 weeks, because all of our stuff was being shipped. My parents bought a cheap laptop for us all to use, which I used for downloading jungle mixes and finding new artists.
The artists I were finding through jungle music started to sound less and less like jungle music. (Squarepusher, Luke Vibert, U-ziq..) I’d always wanted to start a band before the move but could never find anyone interested, so I decided to make my own jungle music. After about a year on a fruity loop demo I was making fairly decent jungle tunes, so I sent one to Ruffah Ras Records. He loved it and wanted to release it on 12″, I havent heard from him for about 2 years though, so its still forthcoming!
How did your move to Australia affect your music-making? That move pretty much has shaped any music ive ever made, and ever will make. Its like on holiday you dont know anyone, dont know your surroundings, your not familiar with the people but you dont care because your going home in 2 weeks. I loved Australia for 2 weeks, until it started to feel like we were stuck there. Knowing no-one, none of the areas. Some people after a few years get used to it, but I think I was just too attached to England.
What musicians and producers have had the biggest impact on your life and productions? Squarepusher & Aphex Twin. They combine all the genres I love.
Who do you think is the most interesting new artist at the moment and why? I dont really keep up to date with new producers, from what ive heard though I’d say James Blake or Mount Kimbie. They are brilliant.
If you had all the time and money in the world, what music project would you embark on? My music is just a little insight into the main ideas that Ive got. I’d make this film ive been building in my head which would change the world.
How would you describe your music? The first batch of stuff I want to make before my die.
You mentioned you were still working on quite basic equipment, do you think that’s helping or hindering you at the moment? I just find it easier, im not well into software or anything. I use whatever is easiest to get my ideas across.
You have quite a high output, while some producers are taking 18 months to finetune tracks, you’re producing high quality material every month – what’s your secret? I think its because ive just got so many ideas, so many tunes I want to make. I always hear people saying there stuck for ideas, but ive just got too many! Ive got a fair bit of spair time aswell because ive just moved back to the UK.
Where would you like your music and life to be in 12 months? I’d like alot of my music to be released, even more of it not to be. I want to just travel around DJing and meeting people, doesnt everyone though?
And finally, please complete the following sentence…
GET SOME… take that tickets!
As a little bonus, this is a little remix from Gerry, forthcoming on Live Ones, very tidy indeed!
Just been put onto this guy by DARK ARX, Keysound Recording’s newest signing. Just having a skim through his Soundcloud page and have picked out these tracks that I think are noteworthy, “Be Free” and “Ridin’” being the standout tracks for me. Could be good stuff to come from this guy.
We are now getting together an almost mid year review of the last twelve months and will be asking friends of GET SOME to give their TOP 5 DJ’s producers/DJ’s with a little example to boot… first up the one and only DARK ARX.
Frank Martiniq – My Visor
Raises the dub techno bar – a supremely heavy track.
Asusu – Small Hours
Strutting hybrid of techno hypnosis and UK bass.
Binary Sequence – Below The Ice
Distressed, heartbreaking dub electronica.
A Made Up Sound – Untitled
Crushed Drexciya-step from 2562′s evil twin.
Caribou – Sun
Pysch-pop alchemy from Dan Snaith – great album.
The new DARK ARX release, Blood Vein, is out now and you can check it out here! It has been getting rave reviews and as followers of GET SOME will know, we are lovin’ it, have a listen…
The second release from the Dark Arx imprint sees the label head step up to the plate with an E.P release of his own. Released on May 3rd 2010, Blood Vein and Streak balance heavyweight swung rhythms with scorched Detroit melodics. Final track Argent & Sable strips the beats to leave a soundscape of dusted drones and bass tones. Absolutely Heavy. You can catch the man himself on Saturday but until then make sure you check the latest DA podcast.
We are back and hitting Gramaphone for the first time in 2010. Check it out:

On the 17th April, Get Some returns home to the The Gramaphone with a card stacked full of talent.
Tipped by Fact Magazine as one of their producers to watch for 2010, Mosca (www.myspace.com/deejaymosca) is leaving no stone unturned this year. When not working on Bruk Magazine (www.brukmagazine.wordpress.com) with Unknown Soulja, or promoting their club night U Dun Know, he’s busy in the lab cooking up beats. Super fresh production, genre smashing club music. Square One is out now on Night Slugs.
With remixes under their belts for Hot Chip and Gorillaz, a pioneering 3D rave night, a radio show and a record label, Dancing Robot (http://www.dancingrobotmusic.co.uk) look set to stop at nothing but world domination. Their live shows are pure hype and the lads’ sets at packed out Coronet and Koko are sights to behold.
Badboy Rinse FM DJ’s Elijah and Skilliam have been rocking out shows across Europe with the toughest grime and dubstep sets. It can’t be overstated how much they do for the scene with their Butterz blog (http://verybutterz.blogspot.com/) pushing the sound far and wide. And with a record label on the way, the levels continues to be kept high. Dubplate pressure not to be missed.
As per, resident Get Some selectors will keep you niced up all night with the right blend of old and new. Stick it in your diary.
5 POUND ALL NIGHT

It has been a long time coming but it is finally here, Binary Sequence – 66/31, the debut release on the Dark Arx imprint has dropped and is a very fine debut at that! It is reminiscent of all things that were great about Electronica in the 90′s with a big nod to the pioneering bass lead music now being produced in the UK. 66/31 would be more than at home if it was released by the infamous WARP RECORDS which is testament to the quality of production and hybrid of styles. If you like Autechre or are a fan of Boards of Canada, then this release is for you.
Here’s a little knowledge about Binary Sequence. Based in London, Binary Sequence has been playing, writing and producing music for 20 years. Before being swept up in the electronica of the late 90s, he spent years tackling the mind-bending harmonics and rhythms of 60s & 70s jazz as a saxophonist and pianist. While starting to write his own music, he began to explore the possibilities of electronic production and after much experimentation and refinement he has created a unique sound, combining dusty distortion with pristine production values. Sonic comparisons point to Pole, Dabrye and Burial – but Binary Sequence’s musicality is rooted in “Artificial Intelligence”-era electronica (Aphex Twin, Autechre, Black Dog).
Track 1, ‘Arc’, takes you on a hypnotic journey through the Dub-Techno sphere, mellow enough for your headphones yet big enough to hit your chest on a dance floor. You move through the spectrum with ‘Below The Ice’ which is more akin to Autechre and Boards, a spatial, gritty electronic experience, which I would say is a darker version of something you might hear on Four Tet’s definitive ‘Rounds’ release in 2003. Finally you reach the peak, in my opinion the track most likely to be heard at a GET SOME dance, ’66/31′. This one creeps up on you. It has been at least six months since I first heard this and I only got it a while ago. It has energy where it shouldn’t have and is dangerously dark. You can really hear the Techno and Electronica influences in this track, the way it builds, the layers that is has to it and the atmosphere it creates. I think this will be right up there in the end of year stakes when we look back at 2010 debut releases. Watch out for this label, big tings to come!
So hats off boys, I know how much hard work it has been to get this record out, congratulations and we here at GET SOME look forward to your next release.
