Fresh off the back of a killer 12″ for Ramp Recordings sister label 4th Wave, Dutch producer Presk steps up to Doc Daneeka‘s Ten Thousand Yen imprint with a killer four-track EP. Watch out for this guy!
-Presk ‘Love Again’ is out now on Ten Thousand Yen
WOW! Some BIG RIDDIMS, all at the same time. As someone we have supported from the off, it gives me pleasure to this guy kicking it the way he is. Doc Daneeka‘s new release, ‘Television EP‘ is a serious bunch of tracks, BUY THEM NOW! I love this guys vibe and I think the music speaks for itself, so check it!
A salute to all our ‘after hours’ athletes, our night skankers, all crew who made it down to the rave on Saturday, and of course all of our DJs. Until next time…
It’s nearly time for our party on Saturday people! Following on from Simbad’s wicked mix, we caught up with one of our other headliners, Doc Daneeka, for a few words. Read on…
Who are you and what do you do?
Hi – I’m doc Daneeka and I make beats. Most of these beats are possible to dance to.
Where are you from and where are now?
I’m from the Big SwansAY in South Wales. It’s pretty much a massive dump. Like a small Detroit by the sea.
When did you first get involved with music and what were you doing?
I used to play in loads of bands, then I started dj’ing. Then I started making beats. and somehow it ended up like this.
First record you bought? Last record you bought?
Hmmmm, first record I had when I was a kid was Simple Minds – Don’t You Forget About Me. My auntie worked for CBS at the time and gave it to me when I was a toddler … Last one was Model 500 - No UFO’s, been catching up on some of that Detroit shit (edit: listen here).
What is your most memorable moment in music?
Finishing up my set in New York recently and hearing the applause was pretty amazing. With all the jetlag I’m not sure I’d actually clocked I was playing in New York – it kinda kicked in for a second then. Big up the New York lot!
Where/Who do you get you inspiration from?
Everything. rhythm wise, the first people that made me want to do this sort of thing were Bugz and Quantic. That rhythm just flipped me out. My sound, to my ears, is almost broken beat meets jungle.
What’s next for you/your label?
I have a single Hold On dropping on Ramp in late august, and my second e.p. ‘Television dropping on PTN shortly afterwards. There will be a couple of remixes floating about too. Apart from that the label will be pretty busy up until October so keep peeled on that one…
If your career in music never was, what would you be doing now?
Something to do with food. Maybe a tea or wine buyer.
Who should we be watching in 2010?
C.R.S.T. and anything on Ten Thousand Yen.
And finally, please complete the following sentence…
GET SOME…tickets for get some and come party on the 14th!

PEACE&OUZO
GET SOME INTERVIEW SIMBAD Who are you and what do you do? I make msuic & dj, have used many aliases when released in the past but im trying to stick just to Simbad deze days…
Where are you currently based? Mainly in London but spending 1/3 of every year in da US
When did you first get involved with music and what were you doing? As a teenager I picked up the saxophone and started playin in bands and got heavily into jazz & funk then moved to Paris in the mid-90′s where i was putting on Jungle & DNB nites with a crew, finally moved to London when i was 19 to pursue my dreams… Had to do many shitty jobs while playing with musicians on the side but got to do loads of session work in studios, mainly house & garage. Then met another french fella called Fred McQuinn and we started our own studio and label (we were releasing under Marathon Men) , thats when i really got into the whole production & record collecting (was workin in some record shops in Soho @ that time too)…
How has the music industry changed since you first got involved? In your opinion, has the online revolution has a positive effect on what you do and the music industry? Well back in da days we would press a 12” and live of it for months easily (as music was selling well in general) and everything was much more ‘physical’ or hand on hand, whether in da studio regarding the gear (hardware equipement like compressors, mixing desk, reverb units etc…) , record releases or carryin crates of vinyl to your gigs you know ? The whole digital revolution had some positive effects regarding freedom of expression & exposure via non-physical mediums but the whole game has changed tremendously, not only money-wise but also substantially…
Like nowadays i feel the information behind a tune or an album has been lost, no more credits attached to it too much and the sound resolution in quality has somehow diminished and we’re getting used to it !! It seems that there’s a lack of knowledge in certain areas and that kinda bothers me coz its as if technology has made our brains regress instead of progressing, we almost leave the computer to do all the thinking and thats fucked up in my humble opinion… I mean its amazing what we can do now with computers just digitally in creativity and all that, but its important to know also what we’re worth just as simple human beings and how we relate to our context in different ways… Hahaha not that i wanna sound patronizing but you know what im sayin ???
Do you find there to be a prejudice against DJ’s who use MP3′s and is software like Ableton Live bridging the gap? Mmmh not really, i mean again its a question of taste and creativity really… You can have the best tunes and not connect with an audience, wether its coz you’re playin’ low resolution mp3′s via your laptop (so the frequency spectrum of the music is totally diminished therefore we can’t feel it through the sound-system) or coz you just dont pay attention to the vibe and just look at your screen all nite LOL but naaaaaaah you can really exploit that digital side of playing in a positive way… Its about energy and emotions & fun @ the end of the day right? (and BASS hahaha)
Personally I still prefer vinyls and cds for the physical touch and the randomness of human error opposed to a robotic flawless pattern of a software… But thats me yo !!! Loads of my fellow dj friends do really great things with Serato and Ableton and i do admire them, somehow its all about being original and being yourself… The way you do it isnt too much of an issue no more… Just spread da love yooooo
What can we expect form Simbad in 2010? Few singles about to come out on a few labels (Defected, 2nd Drop and a few others TBC) and still loads of remixes (Simbad Remixes VOL 2 due any minute on Key Rec.), gotta mix down some collabs projects too (with Cooly G, Deetron, Von D, Fred P, Karizma , Son Of Kick etc…) and more travelling i guess… The Donn T album that i produced in Philly in 2008 has just come out (she’s Questlove sister) and im still rapping up this booogie / funk project featuring some dope singers in the states for a respected label from LA… Also finishing a compilation for Brownswood Rec. with exclusive material from various peeps, quite exciting actually !
If your career in music was to end tomorrow, what would you do instead? Good question haha ! I pretty much live day by day and find it a blessing to survive doing what i love so i dont think about it too much… Maybe i would retire to the Himalayas and become a buddhist monk LOL
Who should we be watching in 2010? What you eat LOL !!! Musically ?? A singer from South Africa called Brian Temba, a french producer named Klimaax, the next Stereotyp album all gone juke style, some Mark Pritchard newness that is out of this world, guys like ID & Baobinga, Airhead, Midland, Trilogy or DNB cat Steve Lynx makin sick beats … The next Disiz & Grems album (the 2 best french rappers) … Labels like Night Slugs, Deep Teknologi, Record Breakin’, Numbers plus all your favourite producers and bands haha

Teddy Music formerly DJ Silencer
Without doubt one of the most important Grime producers working in the game right now. Teddy (formerly DJ Silencer) had produced tracks for Skepta, Lethal B, Ghetts, D Double E and more recently P Money.
His stand-out productions are always popular with MCs and get heavy rotation on radio shows from the likes of Logan Sama, Westwood and Cameo. Teddy’s most recent work is collaboration with up-and-coming producer G.Tank entitled Ghanaian Fire.
A veteran of pirate radio, Teddy holds down a regular spot on newly legal Rinse FM, and has been smashing shows up and down the country. For grime fans anywhere, this is a performance not to be missed!

Simbad
A prolific producer as well as DJ, Simbad has produced under many different aliases but is best known for his collaborations with Karizma, under the guise of IZMABAD.
The no nonsense Frenchman describes his DJ style as ‘Quality Booty Music with a bit of Je Ne Sais Quoi…’ something we very much like the sound of. His versatility sees his style touch jazz, dancehall, funk hip-hop, deep house, garage, disco and broken soul – guaranteed to get the party rocking.

Doc Daneeka
Swansea’s Doc Daneeka, has been steadily establishing himself as one of the most promising producers to come out of the UK underground scene. Putting his own twist on the House and Funky sound with sub-low bass and rattling percussion saw him named in Fact Magazine’s ‘Ones to Watch’ for 2010.
As well as releasing his own tunes on the fabric, RAMP and PTN imprints, he has formed his own label, TenThousandYen. Championed by Marcus Nasty, Kode 9, Giles Peterson, Sinden, and Ben UFO to name but a few, demand for his work has seen him remix Delphic and the Digital Mystikz classic, Pathways.

On Saturday night I popped down to Corsica studios with a few peeps to see the Black Acre records show case. It was good to catch up with some heads that were lingering around and some that were playing on the night that you will see VERY soon playing for us too. The line up was ace and included Pariah, Greymatter, R1 Ryder, Dark Sky, Doc Daneeka and Julio Bashmore, very exciting indeed. One thing I wasn’t expecting was what I got from Blue Daisy.
I saw the engineers setting up on stage a couple of hours earlier and couldn’t believe my eyes, they were setting up an MPC (fairly normal) and a desktop PC, WTF?!?!?!? Later I realised it was for the guy in the gas mask, enter Blue Daisy. If you have ever seen any old school WARP acts and love Electronica or Techno then his performance would have been right up your street. He literally blew me and everyone else at Corsica away. I can’t tell you what he was playing or whether you will ever hear that set again but what I can tell you is he is officially my new favourite live act!
I love his productions and have been following him on Soundcloud for a long time, so if you don’t know his track, here they are…Well worth a listen.
Elevator Music launched at fabric earlier this month at the Numbers party. Their first compilation CD is released on the 8th February and features exclusive tracks from some of the most exiting players in the 140 bpm genre smashing bass music scene. I swear we should just call it 140 and be done with the whole ‘future tech-step psy-jungle funky wonk’ ridiculousness. Artists read like a who to watch for in 2010 list: Hot City, xxxy, Untold, Julio Bashmore and many, many more.
