ORIGINAL FACE – SO GOOD

Posted by OUZO

This track has creeped into my set over the last couple of weeks and I love it! Original Face is a new artist to me, please feel free to correct me on this, and this release comes out on my favourite label of 2010, L2S. They are putting out a lot of records at the moment, some not so good but the rest are amazing! They seem to target 2-Step / Future Garage (or just just bloody Garage) producers and have really focused their energies on being THE label of the revolution. Some amazing work going on there, please keep it coming. Have a listen to this…

THE EVOLUTION OF THE RIDDIM (1999-2006)

Posted by J MONEY

You can’t seem to open a newspaper or watch the TV, without seeing an info-graphic at the moment. I recently came across this poster which I’m guessing was included with Tempa’s Roots of Dubstep Compilations. You might look at the sound some of these artists are pushing now, and question where they’ve been placed or who they’ve been linked to, but if you rewind back to ’06, I think most of them match up. The credits are on the on the other side, so we can’t see them, but like most of Ammunition/Tempa/FWD/Rinse work, I’m guessing they’re the work of Give Up Art.

THE iPAD DJ

Posted by Brett

That’s right. We had the iPod DJ. That was pretty whack, unless you simply saw yourself as a selector with absolutely no use for transitions or creative touches. Now, there are these guys, the iPad DJs. There are a few examples online, but this seems to be the one that has caught the most traction to date. She claims to be the worlds first. I’m not sure exactly how you might qualify that, but I have no grounds to contend it (other than that she has zero skill) so I won’t. Anyway, regardless of the poorly executed demo, you can kinda see what she is getting at…. there is a lot of creativity to be had with these things.

Whilst on the iPad tip, Gaslamp Killer was spotted going ape shit on stage with an iPad in hand at the Worldwide Festival earlier this month. He was doing all sorts of remote triggering, looping and effects while Gonjasufi tried to drown out the crowds booing with his mumbled noodlings. Seemed more like product placement than genuine creative showcasing. Oh well. You can see him doing something similar but far more subdued here.

One last thing, and please be vocal if you disagree, but I can kind of see how the iDaft format of delivering music as a grid set of pre-defined playable parts and loops could lend itself to many more DJ orientated releases of the future, particularly if the touch screen interface becomes king of the decks. If every track were an app… maybe that’s another article of it’s own.

PHOTOGRAPHY: THE MESSAGE/ASHES57

Posted by J MONEY

The Message, Ashes57

This should be a really interesting exhibition. As designer for Swamp 81, Deep Medi and Dubwar, Ashes57 has been heavily involved with the dubstep scene. Her line drawings and graphic design work have graced many record sleeves, flyers and websites and she continues to play her part in the movement, visualising the music that her friends are producing.

Over the years she has amassed a unique collection of photos, capturing the scene’s leading artists both behind the decks in packed out clubs, and in more intimate surroundings, away from the intensity of the dubstep parties. For this show she has complied a selection of her favourite photo portraits. Mala, Skream, Loefah, Coki, Benga, Silkie, Joker, Quest, Sgt Pokes – the pioneers are all here, alongside the emerging artists who represent future of Dubstep.

This show is at The Rag Factory for one night only: Thursday, 22nd July.

JULY VIDEO ROLL-OUT

Posted by J MONEY

10 Man Roll is Jammer’s forthcoming single from his album, Jahmanji. Produced by Mumdance. Summer vibes!

An interesting concept next, a music video which doubles as the trailer for a film. In this instance Rubber, directed by Quinten Dupieux, OST produced by Mr Oizo and Gaspard Augé. Very banging electro, if that’s your thing.

Aloe Blacc (signed to Stone’s Throw), has one hell of a voice and sings real R’n'B, you know RHYTHM AND BLUES.. not that shit you hear on the radio. Anyway, this is not a rant, please check him out and if you like it support it. I also love grainy films like this. I believe the album is due for release September time.

There is also this glorious LIVE version…

Anthemic Dubstep bit from Rinse artist Katy B. Benga on buttons.

More Rinse dubstep, from Skream. I quite like the old skool rave rave, hardcore samples on this beat. I know there are a lot of haters/chinstrokers out there who like to knock him, but the guy is a massive talent and when it comes to dancefloor tracks, he knows what time it is. They’ve gone for an arty Creation-story inspired video, with stop motion animation, skinny models, and stuff like that.

Last but not least, head-nod hip-hop from DELS, stay tuned, this kid could go big! Hot Chip’s Joe Goddard on buttons. Quality video.

PARIAH INTERVIEW

Posted by J MONEY

Remixes for The XX and Ellie Goulding have been followed up with a solid debut release on legendary dance music label R&S. Fresh from recording his debut mix for Mary Anne Hobbs’ experimental show on Radio 1 we caught up with Pariah for a quick interview. This kid is on a tear right now, make sure you catch him at GET SOME on June 19 and big up MAH for the shout out!

Who are you and what do you do?

My name’s Arthur, I’m 22 and I produce music under the name Pariah.

Where are you from and where are you now?

I’m originally from Scotland but I moved down to London about 4 years ago.

When did you first get involved with music and what were you doing?

I guess I’ve always been involved with music from a very young age but I started producing about a year and a half ago. I’d messed about on Logic before when I was about 16 or 17 but I never really learnt how to do anything.

First record you bought? Last record you bought?

I know that the first tape I was given was either a Gloria Estefan or Michael Jackson album and that was when I was about 7 or 8. God knows what the first record I bought was. The last one I bought was the new Oneohtrix Point Never album, “Returnal”. Its amazing!

What is your most memorable moment in music?

Mixing for Mary Anne Hobbs’ show.

Where/Who do you get you inspiration from?

Burial, Brian Eno, Boards of Canada, Move D, early Aphex Twin, Garage, Jungle.

What’s next for you/your label?

My next release is a 2×12″ on R&S which is called “Safehouses EP”. Hopefully gonna get the masters finished in the next week or so.

If your career in music never was, what would you be doing now?

Well, I’m still at uni at the moment so I guess I’d probably just be doing that…. not hugely exciting haha.

Who should we be watching in 2010?

There’s so much good stuff around at the moment. Hessle and Hemlock are killing it at the moment. R&S has some truly amazing music coming in the next few months too.

And finally, please complete the following sentence…

GET SOME… nuts

KODE 9 – YOU DON'T WASH (DUB)

Posted by OUZO

‘I’M ON A UK FUNKY TING’… So, Kode 9 has dropped, or is dropping something new, and it is NOT what I was expecting. This track popped up on my Soundcloud Dashboard, uploaded by K7 Records, and I really don’t know what I think. It’s sort of ok, sort of standard, sort of not. Is this the future for Kode 9 or a one off? Only time will tell… It is labelled as ‘UK Funky, Tropical, Dubstep’, yet another Sub Genre to contend with (haha), and is definitely moving away from the dark Burial sounds that this man pioneered. Have a listen.

PARIAH (R&S/Black Acre)
Blurring the lines between house, techno and garage, Pariah immediately grabbed listeners’ attention with some excellent remix work for Ellie Goulding and The XX. These have been followed up with a debut 12″ release (Detroit Falls) on legendary dance music label R&S records. Demand for this kid has soared, securing him sets across the UK and as far afield as Amsterdam and the Netherlands. BLACK ACRE

Posted by OUZO

On Saturday night I popped down to Corsica studios with a few peeps to see the Black Acre records show case. It was good to catch up with some heads that were lingering around and some that were playing on the night that you will see VERY soon playing for us too. The line up was ace and included Pariah, Greymatter, R1 Ryder, Dark Sky, Doc Daneeka and Julio Bashmore, very exciting indeed. One thing I wasn’t expecting was what I got from Blue Daisy.

I saw the engineers setting up on stage a couple of hours earlier and couldn’t believe my eyes, they were setting up an MPC (fairly normal) and a desktop PC, WTF?!?!?!? Later I realised it was for the guy in the gas mask, enter Blue Daisy. If you have ever seen any old school WARP acts and love Electronica or Techno then his performance would have been right up your street. He literally blew me and everyone else at Corsica away. I can’t tell you what he was playing or whether you will ever hear that set again but what I can tell you is he is officially my new favourite live act!

I love his productions and have been following him on Soundcloud for a long time, so if you don’t know his track, here they are…Well worth a listen.
