Old news but good news. J Money posted about Jamie Woon‘s newest release, Night Air, some time ago now and as it is such a great release and getting so much hype I thought I would go back a little and post about this! This is a track by Subeena called ‘Solidify‘ which was released on Planet Mu over a year ago, but one I don’t think we ever featured on the site. Worth revisiting in my opinion. Have a listen.
Bristol’s BS5TDOT links up with Birmingham’s Gorilla Sawn-Off AKA G.Rilla. Hard.
Back in London, some good rappers coming out of North Weezy recently, in particular A Team‘s Squingy and K Koke. I must’ve listened to this cypher every day since it got put up. Squinge is the truth!
Money is my first love, and money keeps on taking the piss, in and out my life whenever she like…
Back in August, whilst gearing up to his Planet Mu label compilation entitled Bangs & Works Vol.1 Mike Paradinas shared his take on the origins of Footwurk/Footwork and Juke. Whilst showcasing some snippets and teasers of the scenes best he also featured a couple of the tracks secured for Planet Mu. These clearly whet the appetites of many. Since then there has been a definite upspring in the mentions, conversations and touch points featuring Juke and Footwork.
Although many will tell you it’s been on their radar for a couple of years (or more) it’s only in the last few months that it has consistently crept into a plethora of infulential DJ’s mixes and set-lists. Just today, FACT dropped their one hundred and ninety-ninth mix by none other than Mosca. His mix goes straight in hard with DJ Roc ‘Let’s get it started’ on a Juke, into Jungle, jump up vibe. In a rather similar fashion Mark Pritchard, in his Africa Hitech guise, did a little something similar on Wednesday night at Deviation when he used a coupe of Juke bangers as his stepping stone into a sweet old school Jungle selection which went down a treat. Unfortunately not all crowds are as open-minded as the Deviation regulars. This is something our very own J Money found out first hand on Halloween Friday. It sounds like the punters may have been genuinely scared by the intensity of the Footwork vibes. Oh well, maybe next year By then we’ll probably have seen someone like Wiley riding the Juke to widespread acclaim, winning over initial doubters. Although I couldn’t make it in person I also hear that Mr Paradinas did a special guest set at CDR in October alongside Mark Pritchard. As a hotbed for fresh ideas, new talent and some serious innovations in production I imagine his set there would have been met with open ears.
So, while we’ve got a bunch of guys seeding the sound to the open-minded in a dancefloor context, we thought it would make sense to help satiate the interest that seems to be culminating by rounding up some tasters for you. Some more lengthy and focused explorations and showcases of the Juke sound and it’s peripheral influences in mix form come from the likes of Chrissy Murderbot (below), a guy called Screwtec (who runs a Juke/GhettoTech/BootyBass night in Leipzig, Germany) and another favourite of ours being Kaptain Cadillac’s ‘The Footwork Chainsaw Massacre’ mix that Ouzo posted here a few months back. Of course, there is also Mike Paradinas’ own Mixcloud rinse out.
To top it off, if you want my take on where this could be heading, I think Chrissy Murderbot hit’s a tasty note with his Trey Songz ‘Neighbors Know My Name’ remix. I know, it’s sometimes hard to swallow, but when new vibes get the vocal treatment they typically go on to gain wider appeal. And, to be honest, if it sounds like this, I ain’t complaining.
It’s Halloween this weekend so props, costumes and fake blood at the ready everybody! On Friday night catch Ouzo reppin’ for GET SOME at the Halloween Carnival alongside our friends Informed London. There’s prizes for best dressed and they’ve also promised Bendy girls, flying wenches and fire wielding maidens will be bringing the Halloween Carnival back to life… Lord knows, I love a flying wench!
Sample releases from the forthcoming EPs of James Blake and Jamie Woon, give us a glimpse of what we might expect from their début full length albums.
Woon teams up with a more house-oriented Burial for Night Air, a previous collaboration on Wayfaring Stranger being a staple of my record bag. The Ramadanman remix does the original more than justice.
James Blake’s cover of Feist and Chilly Gonzales’Limit to Your Love is something different altogether. Blake sings the vocal himself, rather than sampling, combining his signature keys with a dread half-time beat reminiscent of a Mala production. HEAVY.
This Friday you can catch me and Ouzo spinning at Fruit Loop alongside Sinden’s new signing Wafa, Snitch and the Fruit Loop residents. Tropical house and bass time!
WOW! Here’s something. One EP, Three tracks, one short film, three parts. Great idea, great execution. Watch it, starting with part one and you’ll see what I mean. Happy Friday people!

Teddy Music formerly DJ Silencer
Without doubt one of the most important Grime producers working in the game right now. Teddy (formerly DJ Silencer) had produced tracks for Skepta, Lethal B, Ghetts, D Double E and more recently P Money.
His stand-out productions are always popular with MCs and get heavy rotation on radio shows from the likes of Logan Sama, Westwood and Cameo. Teddy’s most recent work is collaboration with up-and-coming producer G.Tank entitled Ghanaian Fire.
A veteran of pirate radio, Teddy holds down a regular spot on newly legal Rinse FM, and has been smashing shows up and down the country. For grime fans anywhere, this is a performance not to be missed!

Simbad
A prolific producer as well as DJ, Simbad has produced under many different aliases but is best known for his collaborations with Karizma, under the guise of IZMABAD.
The no nonsense Frenchman describes his DJ style as ‘Quality Booty Music with a bit of Je Ne Sais Quoi…’ something we very much like the sound of. His versatility sees his style touch jazz, dancehall, funk hip-hop, deep house, garage, disco and broken soul – guaranteed to get the party rocking.

Doc Daneeka
Swansea’s Doc Daneeka, has been steadily establishing himself as one of the most promising producers to come out of the UK underground scene. Putting his own twist on the House and Funky sound with sub-low bass and rattling percussion saw him named in Fact Magazine’s ‘Ones to Watch’ for 2010.
As well as releasing his own tunes on the fabric, RAMP and PTN imprints, he has formed his own label, TenThousandYen. Championed by Marcus Nasty, Kode 9, Giles Peterson, Sinden, and Ben UFO to name but a few, demand for his work has seen him remix Delphic and the Digital Mystikz classic, Pathways.
