HINGE FINGER

Posted by RICHARD AKI

Joy Orbison has once again teamed up with designer Will Bankhead to start new label Hinge Finger. The pair, who worked together on previous imprint Doldrums, have typically not yet released many details of the new project. We do know any forthcoming releases will be distributed via Honest Jon’s, and going by the promo mix recently dropped by Joy Orbison we can presume the label’s focus will be on deep house and garage sounds. Hinge Finger is definitely one to follow closely in 2012.

You can stream and download Joy Orbison‘s promo mix here via The Trilogy Tapes.

KAVSRAVE — THE BREAK UP EP

Posted by OUZO

Kavsrave is getting the world of blogdom talking this year. As posted by Ralph a couple of days ago, he has already teamed up with Joy Orbison to follow up one of my favourite records from last year, ‘Baggage Handler‘ released on Numbers.

Kavsrave – Baggage Handler by coltcannon

He has now got a couple releases either out or coming out on a new label, to me at least, called Tighten Up. The Break Up EP is somewhere between ‘P Clart‘, ‘Baggage Handler‘ and Girl Unit‘s ‘WUT‘. Big bass, floaty vocals and heavy on the synths. Guaranteed dancefloor killer.

JOY ORBISON vs. KAVSRAVE – ‘UNLIGHTENED’

Posted by RALPH

A big tune from these two heavyweights of the scene. This one is not to be missed, with a long epic build up of nearly 2 and a half minutes (almost half of the tune) we are treated to a manic house and funky tribal bassline and African vocals.

Now play this one out and see what it does to the dancefloor!

JOY ORBISON – BB / LADYWELL

Posted by OUZO

New Joy Orbison release out on Doldrums out on wax only right now. Slightly different from the sounds that took the scene by storm last year, much more house influenced. No doubt you’ll be hearing this on every mix and in every set you listen to for then next few months. Really nice stuff… If the track ‘Ladywell‘ is a reference to the town in South London, that’s where I got my carpet from, strange place. Check it!

GERRY READ INTERVIEW / PATTERNS EP

Posted by OUZO

I am really happy that this EP is finally coming out, it is something I have been waiting on for a long time. Gerry Read (or Gerry R) is a new artist releasing his first EP, ‘Patterns’, on the ever experimental label ‘Dark Arx Recordings‘. I have been following Gerry for just over a year and it was back in the summer when I heard another of his tracks on Soundcloud, ‘Seraphim’, that I got really excited. I emailed him and got chatting, it was one of best sounding demos I had laid my ears on and without any mastering or polishing it seriously blew me away. I put him in touch with Dark Arx as the track was very dubby, very deep with a skippy 2-Step feel, a perfect fit for the artist and the label in my opinion.

Since then Dark Arx has really looked after this guy and they have got Gerry’s first EP in VERY good shape. It was around this time last year that Joy Orbison was getting some serious hype from the scene, the industry and fans alike (myself included), one of the most eagerly anticipated dance records that I can remember, so when I say ‘Patterns’ could go 12 rounds with ‘Hyph Mngo’ you might be a bit skeptical but have a listen, it is the stand out track on the EP and it might just surprise you as to how good it is. I have also heard what is coming next, trust me when I say this, Gerry Read is going to blow, 2011 will be his, along with some of the back end of 2010.

Check it out below, you won’t be dissapointed.

Patterns EP – Gerry Read by Dark Arx Recordings

Gerry Read Interview

What’s your background as a music maker? (when did you start getting interested in writing/producing, tell us about your previous ambient/drone work, etc).
I started off teaching myself to play the guitar and drums in my bedroom. I was always into loads of different bands and never really liked anything electronic. It was when my brother showed me Bad Company, Andy C, Dillinja, & Shy FX where I first started to get into electronic stuff. It wasn’t long after that until I got my first set of turntables, where I started mixing ragga/old skool jungle. I was getting well into it and played at a few house parties my brother had at ours. Then we moved to Australia where we lived from a suitcase for 6 weeks, because all of our stuff was being shipped. My parents bought a cheap laptop for us all to use, which I used for downloading jungle mixes and finding new artists.

The artists I were finding through jungle music started to sound less and less like jungle music. (Squarepusher, Luke Vibert, U-ziq..) I’d always wanted to start a band before the move but could never find anyone interested, so I decided to make my own jungle music. After about a year on a fruity loop demo I was making fairly decent jungle tunes, so I sent one to Ruffah Ras Records. He loved it and wanted to release it on 12″, I havent heard from him for about 2 years though, so its still forthcoming!

How did your move to Australia affect your music-making?
That move pretty much has shaped any music ive ever made, and ever will make. Its like on holiday you dont know anyone, dont know your surroundings, your not familiar with the people but you dont care because your going home in 2 weeks. I loved Australia for 2 weeks, until it started to feel like we were stuck there. Knowing no-one, none of the areas. Some people after a few years get used to it, but I think I was just too attached to England.

What musicians and producers have had the biggest impact on your life and productions?
Squarepusher & Aphex Twin. They combine all the genres I love.

Who do you think is the most interesting new artist at the moment and why?
I dont really keep up to date with new producers, from what ive heard though I’d say James Blake or Mount Kimbie. They are brilliant.

If you had all the time and money in the world, what music project would you embark on?
My music is just a little insight into the main ideas that Ive got. I’d make this film ive been building in my head which would change the world.

How would you describe your music?
The first batch of stuff I want to make before my die.

You mentioned you were still working on quite basic equipment, do you think that’s helping or hindering you at the moment?
I just find it easier, im not well into software or anything. I use whatever is easiest to get my ideas across.

You have quite a high output, while some producers are taking 18 months to finetune tracks, you’re producing high quality material every month – what’s your secret?
I think its because ive just got so many ideas, so many tunes I want to make. I always hear people saying there stuck for ideas, but ive just got too many! Ive got a fair bit of spair time aswell because ive just moved back to the UK.

Where would you like your music and life to be in 12 months?
I’d like alot of my music to be released, even more of it not to be. I want to just travel around DJing and meeting people, doesnt everyone though?

And finally, please complete the following sentence…
GET SOME…
take that tickets!

As a little bonus, this is a little remix from Gerry, forthcoming on Live Ones, very tidy indeed!

TODD EDWARDS – I MIGHT BE (MJ COLE REMIX)

Posted by OUZO

Todd Edaward’s has a new EP out and it follows the template we have come to expect from the seasoned veteran of dance music. Legend, yes, sometimes a little monotonous, also yes. The EP is free from Scion and you can get it from here, DOWNLOAD I MIGHT BE. It features remixes from FEADZ, My Dear Disco, Joy Orbison (which for once isn’t my favourite track where he has been commissioned to do his stuff) and MJ Cole. For me, this is a giant leap forward for MJ Cole as his name has been everywhere in 2010 but his releases have left much to be desired. Slightly lost, or still getting his head around a scene which he left in very good shape almost 10 years ago to make house music, he has definitely found his feet again and I for one am happy to see the man back as he is someone who has influenced my musical life so much. Here it is, check it out.

BACK TO THE FUTURE

Posted by OUZO

I have been chatting to some friends about the quality of releases so far this year and while there have been some really good productions, most people seem to be unimpressed, if not uninterested with what is happening in the UK bass space. Friends seem to be moving away from what is seen as ‘the scene’ and returning to their roots. While this isn’t a bad thing it is also quite surprising that within the space of 6 months I get the feeling that we gone through somewhat of a transistional period. I myself have also returned to my roots, although, I have been helped by the type of releases I have found the most exciting in 2010.

You could say that 2010 is going to be very exciting and that when we look back on this year we might be saying ’2010 has really shaped the future of bass music’. Unfortunately for me, I am getting a horrible feeling that bottom is falling out. I remember being around 14 or 15 when I first got excited about dance music in the UK. Discovering Tod Edward, Tuff Jam, Steve Gurley, Gerideau and Roy Davis Jr changed my life, I thought I had heard the future, and by the sound of things at the moment, I had. Groove Chronicles, EL-B, Sunship, MJ Cole, Wookie, Artful Dodger, Dem 2 and Zed Bias blew me away between 1996 and 2000 and pushed a new exciting sound that will forever be my (along with many others around London) one moment in music.

I got lost in 2003 and strayed form my musical path, mainly because whilst I was studying most of the people I knew turned their noses up at garage and I was a musical outcast. This was a positive in some respects as it opened me up to a broader spectrum of music. I discovered more of the electronica scene that I had only briefly touched on prior to this and also caught up on the history of some of the most inspirational record labels and artists in electronic music as a whole. I became obsessed with Techno, experimental stuff form the rave and hardcore scene, all things Warp records and started digging into the archives of Detroit and Chicago house and garage. This was a massive boost as by the time I first heard about DMZ and FWD>> things had changed massively. I met Whiskey in 2005 and he had been through the transition form garage to grime and then on to Dubstep. This was when I realised what I was missing.

The grooves and melodies I was accustomed to, listening to 2-Step and UKG, had been replaced by a hypnotic, head bopping, dubbed out future bass. There were obvious nods to the sound being pioneered by Ghost Records, EL-B, Groove Chronicles, Zed Bias and Wookie, but something was very different. Apart form the lack of Ralph Lauren shirts (which are once again very evident) and loafers with no socks, there were no girls and no real dance moves (if you ever frequented Liberty’s, Exposure or Twice As Nice as I did back then,  you will know what I am talking about, UKG had it’s own moves and grooves and you could always tell a hardcore garage raver by these). Instead, what you had was a load of sweaty boys in hoods and caps, smoking weed and moving slowly on the spot, I loved it!

FWD>> was an eye opener, it was there I was exposed to the most varied of sounds as it was on a weekly basis but, DMZ was where I really felt the spirit of the scene and it became my second real moment in music when I first heard Mala drop ‘Anti War Dub’ and Skream play ‘Midnight Request Line’, I was mesmorised! These tracks will forever be ingrained in my memory, this was the new future and I didn’t know what the future held or where it would take me.

The point of all of this of course is what is happening now. As the scene has grown and become more popular it has fragmented opening itself up to more influences, collaborations and crossovers. There are plenty of young and exciting producers around and lots of very interesting music, which is obviously great! The music is the most important thing after all and the evolution of this sound had really stunned me. I never thought it would get to where it is now and I am happy and excited to have been involved for all of these years. From a Saturday night MC’ing with DJ Miles Slater on Flex FM to GET SOME, it has been an amazing journey. My issue right now is that the lines may be blurring a little too much and this is causing a little bit of saturation.

The Facebook phenomenon, Twitter, MySpace and Soundcloud have made this music more accesible than ever and opened it up to a huge audience. But things are beginning to sound very similar and apart form Joy Orbison, nothing has excited me very much in the last 12 months, nothing that dance floor ready anyway. Mount Kimbie, James Blake and Actress are amazing, but not something I would drop at 1 in the morning. I think the saturation has stunted the scenes growth, or creativity in my opinion and it is struggling to come to terms with the amount new music being released and is having serious problems digesting it. So much so that I think a lot of people are also struggling with the same things and are therefore being put off. In fact, I have gone ‘back to the future’ and started buying up a lot of ‘Future Garage’. For me, a sound that is around 12-13 years old, still sounds the most futuristic, exciting and progressive. As my friends are returning to their roots, I have returned to mine. I like to think that the first half of this year has been some kind of a reflective period for most producers and that this is the calm before the storm.

I would also say that the last year has been a period of growing pains for the scene, in my opinion, and that at some point it will come through this period of growth and return bigger, stronger and harder. But I have serious doubts as to when, if at all it will ever give birth to another ‘Anti-War Dub’ or if we will ever revisit the the kind of atmosphere that FWD>> created on a Friday night with there being so much choice nowadays. We are trying to produce this kind of new and exciting atmosphere at GET SOME raves and I think we are getting there, slowly but surely. Would be nice if we could eventually achieve, we will keep trying that’s for sure!

Here some tracks I really liking right now, a return to something deeper maybe? Have a listen and enjoy!

Please feel free to comment and add to the debate…

April Mix For GETSOME by picturesmusic

Here’s a mix that I’ve put together of music that I’ve been feeling over the past few weeks. Some old, some new, some unreleased. There’s a few bootlegs, some grime, the usual “underground music” and, my personal favourite, a track by hipster super-group Gayngs.

SCUBA – TRIANGULATION

Posted by OUZO

I have been a huge fan of Scuba’s for a while now and not just for his deep, Dub-Tenchno sound but also for his label(s), Hot Flush. They have really been pushing the boundaries in the last year or two with releases from Pangaea, Sigha, TRG & 2562, Untold, Mount Kimbie and most notably, Hot Flush gave us the debut Joy Orbison record, Hyph Mngo.

Scuba has himself released a string of EP’s in the twelve months, my favorite being “Nagative’ for the “Speak EP’. Have a listen:

I think that the new album ‘Triangulation’ is a real step forward for Scuba. It feels like there is a lot more energy in these tracks and that he has introduced  some new styles of production on this, his second album. Overall I think the album is great, tracks like ‘Minerals’ remind me of early Four Tet (something straight out of ‘Rounds’) using samples of running taps to create some atmosphere in the intro of the track. ‘Lights Out’ has a sound of it’s own, nodding firmly to warm, early, house mixed with a dash of Dub-Tenchno and total rhythmic genius. The track below, ‘You Got Me’, is a great example of Scuba’s work and is one of the best at creating a hypnotic rolling sound along side people like Pangaea, Peverelist, 2562 and Martyn.

Scuba – You Got Me by Hotflush

I have a lot of time for this album and think you should give it a go. You can check the album out digitally or on vinyl out here: http://www.boomkat.com/item.cfm?id=285258.

OUZO BEATS – JANUARY 2010 by OUZO

EVERY ESSENTIAL MIX… EVER

Posted by MATT

I’m sure that by the time I’ve posted this article that the world will ‘already know’ about this site and that everyone on Twitter (or Bebo?) or whatever will have sent it to everyone else they know.

But it doesn’t matter.

This site is an archive of every Radio 1 Essential Mix ever. Most importantly, this site serves as a record of some of the best DJs around at any point in time, because it’s a pity that 5 days after you’ve heard them on the radio the BBC takes the mixes down from their site. And they go all the way back to 1993!

In amongst the Danny Ramplings and Roger Sanchezs of this world are stunning mixes by the likes of Flying Lotus, DJ Zinc, Gui Boratto and Scratch Perverts (2004 mix of the year if you ask me). Oh yeah, and hundreds of others…

But, because we’re so cutting edge over here at GET SOME, we noticed that the site doesn’t have Four Tet’s essential mix from 2 days ago. In this day and age, 48 hours is a long time to wait. Too long some might say. Well, Discobelle have come correct and you can already download the mix in ever-lasting MP3 format.

Tracklist? Sure.
