It’s October, things shouldn’t be like this, shorts, tee’s and bubbly house music still very much on the menu. Normally at this time of the year I have settled into some deep house or techno and the club nights I attend are a little cosier, a bit darker. So, seeing as the weather doesn’t want to play ball I am going to rebel, and here’s my backlash to it all, Dexter‘s latest release on Clone Records, ‘Great Northern Diver‘. T.H.I.N.G. is unbelievably good, my favourite on the release, the track feel most correct for what should be happening at this time of year. The dubby basslines remind me of 2562 and Martyn circa 2008, the warmth of the vocals nod at 90′s R&B, which isn’t a new thing, but the combination is fresh. Have a listen below.
To say Mosca is doing a lot right now would be an understatement. After dropping the killer double A side on Numbers (Done Me Wrong and Bax) earlier this month, he shifts direction to Martyn’s 3024 label, with four slick house tunes. With each release he sets a new standard and there seems no genre he can’t turn his hand to, delivering the goods every time. An immense talent. The Wavey EP is out on 7 November.
As well as this, in celebration of his reaching 5000 followers on twitter, he has given away these tracks for free here.
If you ask me, Martyn is a don is this game and always will be, one of the most hypnotic and considered sets I have ever heard was when I saw him play at Deviation a few years ago. You didn’t need to be taking anything to get high to that. He has an evolving sound which, over the last 4 or 5 years, has spanned through most sub genres of bass music with his latest single seemingly a culmination of all of his previous work. ‘Viper‘ has got big crunchy cords reminiscent of early 2000′s D&B or early Distance sounding dubstep, all set upon a backdrop of spaced out rave sounds. The ‘London Arches Edit‘ is actually the better version of the two, a little more palatable and very ravey. ‘Masks‘ is an extension of the sounds form the album ‘Great Lengths‘, heavy 2-Step influenced, dancle floor house music. Good stuff, have a listen.
Coming off the back off a sustained period of acclaim as one half of Instramental, Damon Kirkham‘s first solo material as Jon Convex debuts on the legendary Martyn‘s label 3024 with a sound that strikes off in a direction entirely of its own. I am really digging this mix of sounds and styles, this is definitely the work of a well trained ear and an obviously talented producer. It has so many layers to it, dark techno fused with UK 2-Step, plus a pinch of house, much like the work of later Instrumental productions. Can’t wait to see where this goes and what Jon Convex follows this up with.

This is HOUSE MUSIC. Julio is back with the Julio Bashmore EP on 3024 records, the label of electronic music don, Martyn. Julio seems to be everywhere right now, lets hope he doesn’t burn out, stay with us man. Some mad stuff going here, check it out.
All I can say is, WOW! Martyn has been DJ’ing his nuts off for the last two years and Mike Slott has been doing his thing but this is an awesome piece of music from two people I admire very much. Have a listen to the clip via All City Record‘s Soundcloud.
I have been digging through some older bits this week and one thing that strikes me is how fresh most of KODE 9′s and MARTYN’s track still sound. In fact, it has been a very long time since KODE 9 released an album (Memories Of The Future, 2006) although he has sporadically released EP’s since, my favorite of which being Bad/2 Bad in 2008. There also doesn’t seem to be any sign of a new release/album although I suspect something is just around the corner…
MARTYN on the other hand clearly seems to be building up to quite a big release toward the end of the year and his latest track, Friedrichstrasse (which I have been battering all year, must put this one away for a while…), maintains his trademark levels of energy and top end carnage and hopefully is a sign of things to come from him!
Maybe these guys are the answer to what I was writing about a few weeks back, hopefully these two KINGS OF BASS are the answer. Anyway, here are some of the tracks that prompted me to write this and that I will always love, enjoy people…
I have been a huge fan of Scuba’s for a while now and not just for his deep, Dub-Tenchno sound but also for his label(s), Hot Flush. They have really been pushing the boundaries in the last year or two with releases from Pangaea, Sigha, TRG & 2562, Untold, Mount Kimbie and most notably, Hot Flush gave us the debut Joy Orbison record, Hyph Mngo.
Scuba has himself released a string of EP’s in the twelve months, my favorite being “Nagative’ for the “Speak EP’. Have a listen:
I think that the new album ‘Triangulation’ is a real step forward for Scuba. It feels like there is a lot more energy in these tracks and that he has introduced some new styles of production on this, his second album. Overall I think the album is great, tracks like ‘Minerals’ remind me of early Four Tet (something straight out of ‘Rounds’) using samples of running taps to create some atmosphere in the intro of the track. ‘Lights Out’ has a sound of it’s own, nodding firmly to warm, early, house mixed with a dash of Dub-Tenchno and total rhythmic genius. The track below, ‘You Got Me’, is a great example of Scuba’s work and is one of the best at creating a hypnotic rolling sound along side people like Pangaea, Peverelist, 2562 and Martyn.
I have a lot of time for this album and think you should give it a go. You can check the album out digitally or on vinyl out here: http://www.boomkat.com/item.cfm?id=285258.
Skeet over to Sonic Router to read an excellent interview with one of the UK underground’s rising stars, Pariah. With some strong remixes under his belt for Ellie Goulding and The xx, we’re looking forward to hearing more from Pariah over the course of the year. Definitely one to watch out for. His selection blends current sounds with some old classics (Cape Fear!!!) – just the way we like it.

Elevator Music launched at fabric earlier this month at the Numbers party. Their first compilation CD is released on the 8th February and features exclusive tracks from some of the most exiting players in the 140 bpm genre smashing bass music scene. I swear we should just call it 140 and be done with the whole ‘future tech-step psy-jungle funky wonk’ ridiculousness. Artists read like a who to watch for in 2010 list: Hot City, xxxy, Untold, Julio Bashmore and many, many more.
