Remixes for The XX and Ellie Goulding have been followed up with a solid debut release on legendary dance music label R&S. Fresh from recording his debut mix for Mary Anne Hobbs’ experimental show on Radio 1 we caught up with Pariah for a quick interview. This kid is on a tear right now, make sure you catch him at GET SOME on June 19 and big up MAH for the shout out!
Who are you and what do you do?
My name’s Arthur, I’m 22 and I produce music under the name Pariah.
Where are you from and where are you now?
I’m originally from Scotland but I moved down to London about 4 years ago.
When did you first get involved with music and what were you doing?
I guess I’ve always been involved with music from a very young age but I started producing about a year and a half ago. I’d messed about on Logic before when I was about 16 or 17 but I never really learnt how to do anything.
First record you bought? Last record you bought?
I know that the first tape I was given was either a Gloria Estefan or Michael Jackson album and that was when I was about 7 or 8. God knows what the first record I bought was. The last one I bought was the new Oneohtrix Point Never album, “Returnal”. Its amazing!
What is your most memorable moment in music?
Mixing for Mary Anne Hobbs’ show.
Where/Who do you get you inspiration from?
Burial, Brian Eno, Boards of Canada, Move D, early Aphex Twin, Garage, Jungle.
What’s next for you/your label?
My next release is a 2×12″ on R&S which is called “Safehouses EP”. Hopefully gonna get the masters finished in the next week or so.
If your career in music never was, what would you be doing now?
Well, I’m still at uni at the moment so I guess I’d probably just be doing that…. not hugely exciting haha.
Who should we be watching in 2010?
There’s so much good stuff around at the moment. Hessle and Hemlock are killing it at the moment. R&S has some truly amazing music coming in the next few months too.
And finally, please complete the following sentence…
In the run up to June 19, we are pleased to bring you the first mix and interview of our featured artists, R1 Ryders.
Who are you and what do you do?
K: Im Karnak..
S: Im Skeelo, and we are R1 Ryders..
K: We make Funkitek!
Where are you from and where are you now?
We are from London, UK and right now in the lab working on new material.
When did you first get involved with music and what were you doing?
S: I first got pulled into music by a family friend who needed help to set up speaker stacks at a carnival in Dominica.
K: I first fully got involved with music after making the transition from being a bedroom dj to getting my first booking at an under 18’s event. I was 15 and I haven’t looked back since.
First record you bought? Last record you bought?
K: The first record I bought was Chronic 2, a one away jungle tune that I think was an early Krust production. I haven’t bought records in a while as we either make our music or get it sent to us.
S: The first record I bough was an old school Buju Banton record and the last record I bought was our Burnout EP.
What is your most memorable moment in music?
S: Finishing the Full Throttle EP was a milestone for us in my eyes..
K: Being named by Fact Magazine in its top producers to watch for 2010 was kinda cool. All the hard work is paying off.
Where/Who do you get your inspiration from?
S: My mother is a great inspiration to me..
K: The way the underground music scene in London has progressed is a big inspiration to me. The way in which it keeps mutating and evolving into something new is a beautiful thing and it inspires me to do the same, to contribute to this melting pot of wonderful ideas. I feel truly blessed to be a part of this movement.
What’s next for you/your label?
K: We have Full Throttle EP (the London anthem Hydraulic features on our guest mix) landing soon as well as a single we are working on with Carly Bond called “Ain’t Wastin No Time”.
S: We also have some music we have worked on with UK Funky Veteran MC Dogtaniaun coming soon as well as collaborations with Night Slug’s Mosca and Deep Medi’s Quest.
If your career in music never was, what would you be doing now?
S: I’d be playing Football.
K: Most definitely a professional artist of some sort, or an architect. I’m not too sure but I know I was meant to do this.
Who should we be watching in 2010?
R1 Ryders, Carly Bond, Ikonika, Dogtaniaun, Mosca and Quest.

GET SOME… is the only place to be on the 19th.. BE THERE!
Check out the exclusive R1 Ryders mix for GET SOME below, featuring unreleased material from their forthcoming EP!
My boy Jonny has pulled a spectacular mix out of the bag, soooooo good I just had to share. Jonny is one of the most undercover guys, he used to work closely with legend Zed Bias in Manchester, collaborating on a record label and club night, DUB SPOT. But you never hear him or see much of him, he quietly gets on with shit and smashes it with tracks like the one below! Quite admirable really considering the amount of self promotion we are all guilty of. He has got untold amount of productions, remixes and mixes up his Soundcloud and also runs Jus’ Listen Recordings which features tracks by Jonny and others well worth listening to! Keep up the good work JM, we need more people like you… Here it is peeps. Happy listening…
Elevator Music launched at fabric earlier this month at the Numbers party. Their first compilation CD is released on the 8th February and features exclusive tracks from some of the most exiting players in the 140 bpm genre smashing bass music scene. I swear we should just call it 140 and be done with the whole ‘future tech-step psy-jungle funky wonk’ ridiculousness. Artists read like a who to watch for in 2010 list: Hot City, xxxy, Untold, Julio Bashmore and many, many more.
It has been a long time coming but it is finally here, Binary Sequence – 66/31, the debut release on the Dark Arx imprint has dropped and is a very fine debut at that! It is reminiscent of all things that were great about Electronica in the 90′s with a big nod to the pioneering bass lead music now being produced in the UK. 66/31 would be more than at home if it was released by the infamous WARP RECORDS which is testament to the quality of production and hybrid of styles. If you like Autechre or are a fan of Boards of Canada, then this release is for you.
Here’s a little knowledge about Binary Sequence. Based in London, Binary Sequence has been playing, writing and producing music for 20 years. Before being swept up in the electronica of the late 90s, he spent years tackling the mind-bending harmonics and rhythms of 60s & 70s jazz as a saxophonist and pianist. While starting to write his own music, he began to explore the possibilities of electronic production and after much experimentation and refinement he has created a unique sound, combining dusty distortion with pristine production values. Sonic comparisons point to Pole, Dabrye and Burial – but Binary Sequence’s musicality is rooted in “Artificial Intelligence”-era electronica (Aphex Twin, Autechre, Black Dog).
Track 1, ‘Arc’, takes you on a hypnotic journey through the Dub-Techno sphere, mellow enough for your headphones yet big enough to hit your chest on a dance floor. You move through the spectrum with ‘Below The Ice’ which is more akin to Autechre and Boards, a spatial, gritty electronic experience, which I would say is a darker version of something you might hear on Four Tet’s definitive ‘Rounds’ release in 2003. Finally you reach the peak, in my opinion the track most likely to be heard at a GET SOME dance, ’66/31′. This one creeps up on you. It has been at least six months since I first heard this and I only got it a while ago. It has energy where it shouldn’t have and is dangerously dark. You can really hear the Techno and Electronica influences in this track, the way it builds, the layers that is has to it and the atmosphere it creates. I think this will be right up there in the end of year stakes when we look back at 2010 debut releases. Watch out for this label, big tings to come!
So hats off boys, I know how much hard work it has been to get this record out, congratulations and we here at GET SOME look forward to your next release.
A great mix, definitely worth a listen. I was blown away at the back end of last year when London based producer Greymatter dropped his ‘When I Was Lost / Grot’ EP, and have been loving his work ever since. Expect big things in 2010, and who knows, maybe more of Greymatter here on GET SOME…? Look out for his forthcoming Album, ‘Mind Over Matter’, due to be released at the back end of next month.
It’s finally here, after 4/5 years (by my count anyway) Kieran Hebden, aka Four Tet, has finally released his new album, ‘There Is Love In You’. I saw him perform at Plastic people in 2007/08, to celebrate the release of his ‘Ringer EP’, which at the point was quite some change in direction. He moved away from his more experimental Electronica toward a deeper, more Techno influenced series of tracks. For me this was a very exciting change.
He has since collaborated with Burial, and allowed the prolific Joy Orbison to remix his latest single, ‘Love Cry’.
The question I was asking was, where next? Well This is where and from the quick listen I have given it, ‘There Is Love In You’ promises to be ever bit as amazing as his earlier works. Many producers are afraid of trying something new, changing direction, but Four Tet has and in my opinion he has done so successfully. This guy is genuinely one the greatest British musicians of our generation and slowly but surely he is being recognised as so.
It may only be January but I am willing to bet that this will be one of the best mixes you will hear all year. Seamlessly blending between funky, dubstep, garage and grime in the manner we have come to expect from Oneman. LEVELS
The perfect soundtrack for your Saturday – watch out for this guy in 2010.
