Punch Drunk boss, Peverelist has just launched his new label, Livity Sounds, an imprint dedicated to bringing you limited edition, hand stamped vinyl, designed by the Tape-echo boys. The first release is a split 12″ between Peverelist and Kowton, entitled ‘Livity Sound 001‘. The tracks were both played in a recent show by Tape-echo, go have a listen here, they sound insane! The release will be available through Punch Drunk, Idle Hands and Hardwax.
I’ve been away for a while learning how to be a dad but I am back now and this is something from a couple of producers who I have admired for a long time. I think it’s a refreshingly Bristol sounding release, which in the age of hype I am very happy to hear. Check it out.
I have been a huge fan of Scuba’s for a while now and not just for his deep, Dub-Tenchno sound but also for his label(s), Hot Flush. They have really been pushing the boundaries in the last year or two with releases from Pangaea, Sigha, TRG & 2562, Untold, Mount Kimbie and most notably, Hot Flush gave us the debut Joy Orbison record, Hyph Mngo.
Scuba has himself released a string of EP’s in the twelve months, my favorite being “Nagative’ for the “Speak EP’. Have a listen:
I think that the new album ‘Triangulation’ is a real step forward for Scuba. It feels like there is a lot more energy in these tracks and that he has introduced some new styles of production on this, his second album. Overall I think the album is great, tracks like ‘Minerals’ remind me of early Four Tet (something straight out of ‘Rounds’) using samples of running taps to create some atmosphere in the intro of the track. ‘Lights Out’ has a sound of it’s own, nodding firmly to warm, early, house mixed with a dash of Dub-Tenchno and total rhythmic genius. The track below, ‘You Got Me’, is a great example of Scuba’s work and is one of the best at creating a hypnotic rolling sound along side people like Pangaea, Peverelist, 2562 and Martyn.
I have a lot of time for this album and think you should give it a go. You can check the album out digitally or on vinyl out here: http://www.boomkat.com/item.cfm?id=285258.
Everyone who went to see Tim Burton’s self-indulgent Alice in Wonderland said the highlight was the trailer for Tron 2, or Tron Legacy as Disney are calling it. I have fond memories of the first film. I guess it was to me what Star Wars was to earlier generations.. It had a brilliant bleakness to it. The never-ending dark landscapes, ominous music and characters you cared about. Rare for Disney. The new one looks like it has potential but I don’t want to over hype and then be made to eat my own words. It deserved mentioning that Daft Punk are doing the soundtrack which I think is a good thing. There have been many a ‘leaked track!!!!!!’ on the net, but I think only one of them is legit. Roll on December!
Of all the ‘leaked tracks!!!!’, whether official or not, this one is my favourite.
Onto more musical matters but keeping with the futuristic theme. Peverelist is the latest artist to mix for Fact magazine. There is no tracklist, just music, including what sounds to me like unreleased tracks from the man himself.
If that’s your thing then be sure to check out rising Manchester based producer xxxy.
