Reggae Roast Jamdown
In Association With Wray & Nephew Overproof Rum
Saturday 19th November | 9pm – 5am
Plan B | 418 Brixton Road, London, SW9 7AY
Our good friends Reggae Roast kick off their new series of events at Plan B, Brixton. The Jamdown sessions will showcase the best roots reggae, dub, dubstep & jungle music from across the globe. Each event will feature a selection of top dubwise acts, supported by the renowned Reggae Roast residents DJs & singers. Situated in the heart of Brixton, Plan B is arguably the best club venue in south London, with a reputation for top quality programing, sound system and atmosphere.
The first Jamdown event showcases a selection of artists from the reggae roast records roster. Each of the headline acts have served up critically acclaimed 12” releases on the Reggae Roast imprint over the past 3 years. For this mammoth first event we have decided to bring them all together, displaying the full effect of the reggae roast movement. We have also drafted in some additional special guests to nice up the dance, including 9-piece live act; OnlyJoe and south London stalwart DJ Snuff.
Headlining the event are Mungo’s Hifi who have been hotter than lava this year! Having hosted the legendary Mungo’s courtyard arena at Outlook festival and releasing a string of massive releases on their Scotch Bonnet label, the Glasgow based super group are seemingly unstoppable. Pioneering a pounding, 21st century rub-a-dub style, Mungo’s Hifi have been serving up some serious riddims, featuring celebrated vocalists such as Movado, Sugar Minot and Earl 16. Not to mention their standout remix on the ‘Reggae Music’ EP released on Reggae Roast Records in May this year.
RSD, perhaps better known as Bristol bass and drum music legend Rob Smith and one half of the respected production duo Smith and Mighty, has been pushing bass heavy rhythms for more than two decades. He remains firmly at the forefront of Bristol’s endlessly inventive music scene, with a staggering discography and a range of projects encompassing dub, drum and bass, 2-step and dubstep.
Adding a live injection to the proceedings, Kenny Knots & Ruben Da Silva will both perform 30-min PA sets, playing classic tracks including ‘Watch How the People Dancing’ and ‘Bless A Sound’ not to mention exclusives performances of ‘Sensi Skank’ & ‘Love Light’, forthcoming on Reggae Roast Records. Also playing on the night will be Reggae Roast founders Exel & Moodie and resident selector; Dub Hunter. The sessions will be hosted by the one and only Ramon Judah.
This event guarantees to be a ROADBLOCK, grab your tickets in advance from here.
Reggae Roast returns to The CAMP Basement for another night of quality roots & culture, welcoming special guests, Channel One Sound System. Mikey Dread & Ras Kayleb will be passing through for an exclusive 2-hour set, testing the limits of the blistering 20k sound system, sending bass rumblings across the streets of East London. This is not to be missed!
Channel One should need no introduction, having been one of the UKs leading sounds for 30 golden years. Last year they earned themselves the title of ‘Champions of the Redbull Culture Clash’, seeing off competition from the likes of Skream & Benga, Mettalheadz & Soul Jazz Records, officially making them the leaders of sound system culture in the UK.
They return after an uplifting set at the Reggae Roast new years eve party for another lesson in the power of bass, drums and steppers riddims. Controller Mikey Dread will be dropping his legendary selection of conscious records spanning 5 decades. Ras Kayleb supplies lyrical chants, commanding the audience and elevating the energy in the CAMP basement.

The Reggae Roast crew have put together this wicked compilation of past and future releases. The album features a selection of forthcoming Reggae Roast Records singles, some classic tracks from the label vaults, plus some of their favourite cuts from the past 12 months. The track list is typical of a Reggae Roast sound system selection. It features the type of conscious message, energy and vibes the crew have become synonymous with promoting. It’s wall to wall with hot tracks, Buffalo Soldier is my pick of the bunch though. FIRE!

Heating up the dance with some serious vibes, the Reggae Roast crew have dropped their latest dubplate, this time from Earl 16. The 4 track EP is backed up with dub and dubstep remixes from Manasseh and Mungo’s Hi-Fi respectively. Support from David Rodigan and Don Letts, tips this to be a hot favourite for Summer.

Reggae Roast kick off the New Year with a new EP release and launch party at their continued home of The City Arts and Music Project Basement. This release is particularly special to us as it features a dub techno remix from GET SOME affiliate Dark Arx. VERY DREAD.
Roots Fans! London based crew, Reggae Roast have released their latest record, this time from Ghetto Priest. Counting selector David Rodigan amongst early championers of this tune, Evolution is a heavy-weight steppa with a concious lyrical message. On the flip are two remixes, my personal favourite is Richie Phoe’s dub version, but for those who like a more jump-up sound there’s a dubstep cut from rising producer Rack N Ruin.
On Friday May 14, Reggae Roast returns to Shacklewell Lane to celebrate the launch of their 7” Vinyl release ‘Serious’ on Reggae Roast Records. This is set to be another legendary dance with a host of special guest artists alongside Exel, Moodie & Ramon Judah. Topping the bill is Iration Steppas front man Mark Iration traveling down from Leeds to play an exclusive 2 hour set of dub plates and specials from across the spectrum of sound system music. Anyone who has seen Iration Steppas before will know about Mark’s infectious energy and vibe building capabilities. This is a must for all true reggae skankers! Also performing a special live PA on the night will be: DANDELION. Lead singer of The Hempolics, who’s new single ‘Serious’ release on Reggae Roast Records on 19th April has been tearing up the airwaves over the last few months.
Nas and Damian Marley have been working on a joint album together, titled Distant Reltaives, scheduled for release sometime this year (it was supposed to drop in Autumn ’09 but we know how these things go…) Two tracks have been leaked:
Whatever your feelings about each artist individually, the prospect of an album collab is exciting. Lyrically and musically both these artists have had a dynamic effect on their respective genres. Personally though, the potential for a live show backed by a full band has me checking both artists’ myspace for tour dates. Watch this space…
As we kick off this week in the warm up to the party on Friday night, we bring you Exel’s interview and mix from Reggae Roast’s latest show at the Jazz Cafe featuring Ishu.
