JON CONVEX — CONVEXSATIONS EP
Posted by OUZO
Coming off the back off a sustained period of acclaim as one half of Instramental, Damon Kirkham‘s first solo material as Jon Convex debuts on the legendary Martyn‘s label 3024 with a sound that strikes off in a direction entirely of its own. I am really digging this mix of sounds and styles, this is definitely the work of a well trained ear and an obviously talented producer. It has so many layers to it, dark techno fused with UK 2-Step, plus a pinch of house, much like the work of later Instrumental productions. Can’t wait to see where this goes and what Jon Convex follows this up with.

TECHNO: BEN KLOCK
Posted by OUZO
Berlin born DJ, producer and label owner Ben Klock is without a doubt one of the most significant characters in techno’s recent history. He is a resident at Berghain which has undoubtedly influenced Klock’s approach as a DJ and producer as well.
He is most famed for playing techno sets full of hypnotic, deep and heavy grooves he has earned him an excellent international reputation over the last few years. Klock pursues an unexacting fusion of quantum jumps and tradition – including effortless melodies or hook lines that you would usually associate with house. Being able to harmonize this method of industrial austerity, natural musicality and an impressive physicality is Ben Klock’s great art and skill.
All you really need to know about Klock is that he plays 12 hour sets from 10am to 10pm on a Sunday afternoon, any DJ that can do that and keep the party moving is good in my books. Hats off!

ADDISON GROOVE — THIS IS IT / MAKE UM BOUNCE
Posted by OUZO
Absolutely massive new Tectonic 12″ from man of the moment, Addison Groove. ‘Footcrab‘ was one of the riddim’s of 2010, released on Loefah‘s Swamp 81 imprint. Addison Groove, otherwise known as Headhunter, is one of highest profile British producers to be pushing the Chicago Footwork/Juke sound in the UK and in my opinion, he is doing bloody fine job of it! Influenced by the productions of Headhunter, there are Techno undertones to all of these tracks. Really dark stuff.
MIDLAND — THROUGH MOTION / SHELTER
Posted by OUZO
I am a huge fan of Midland, I love the eclectic nature of his productions, such a broad range of tracks. It’s been a while since he has put up anything of note on his Soundcloud but today a preview of his new EP, forthcoming on AUS, popped up (brought to my attention by Sara, thanks!). ‘Through Motion‘ and ‘Shelter‘ are two huge deep house tracks, 4am bizzle for sure, probably more suited to the Berlin early bird crew than Plastic People in London! As with so many records in the past 3-4 years there is a distinct Detroit influence in these productions but also drawing form the hypnotic techno sound championed by artists of Hard Wax. All round a winner in my opinion, in the bag for my next outing, whether it gets played or not is another thing, maybe another number for when I hit Athens, hope it is a late one! Check it out.

PANGAEA — NEW HESSLE AUDIO RELEASE
Posted by OUZO
A man I rated very highly a couple of years ago, someone I still rate now, has come out of the wilderness with some real fire. Pangaea returns on Hessle Audio with this 2 track single which is quite dark and techy but also has the stamp of other classic Pangaea tracks. ‘Inna Daze‘ is my favourite of the two, using skippy drums, air horns, a nice cut up vocal and a Berghain influenced bass line. Maybe he’s been listening to Dark Arx, who knows? ‘Won’t Hurt‘ is a much more classic Dubstep track, it’s a solid piece of production but not necessarily an exciting one. None the less, as I said, I am still a fan of his, mostly for his 2009 and pre 2009 productions and hopefully this is the first of many more releases from Pangaea this year. Have a listen to the release plus a couple of my past favourites.

HOUSE: JOHN ROBERTS, SDC AND MORE
Posted by MATTI’ve been listening to a lot of “new” house music over the past few months. Moody staring out of train windows is becoming something of a hobby these days, and nothing seems to accompany that better than a soundtrack steeped in crumbling industrial America and modern European sensibilities. Here’s a run down of some of my favourites of the last few months
John Roberts – Navy Blue (Dial)
I have been listening to “Glass Eights” on a daily basis since I first got it. The only American to be signed to Dial, John Roberts effortlessly strings together samples, live instruments and intelligent 4/4 ideas into a hypnotic and wholly essential LP that echoes Chicago house and smokey jazz bars in equal measure.
Space Dimension Controller – Kaleidoscopic Ecstasy (R&S)
Treading the path between house, funk and disco, SDC has been on my radar for a while since Kyle Hall dropped his name in an interview last year. He used to give his music away for free but has recently released on R&S and Kinnego. His music is swirling and hazy, maintaing a throwback feel to the 70s and 80s whilst remaining completely current.
Nicolas Jaar – Russian Dolls (Clown & Sunset)
At only 19 years old, Nicolas Jaar is already making huge waves on the house and techno cicuits. Releasing on the fantastic Wolf & Lamb, Circus Company and Clown & Sunset, Jaar has a unique and fantastically talented way of creating engrossing yet minimal pieces. Flitting from house to techno to hip-hop and folk his music involves clever use of sampling and heritage electronic references. He has an album on the way, and it is not to be missed.
Jay Haze – I Wait For You Ft. Laila Tov (Contexterroir) (The first 20 seconds are silent so skip ahead…)
Jay Haze has been releasing music for over 10 years now, but his recent production has really grabbed me. This track, taken from his forthcoming album, is dark and haunting with a female vocal that’s sultry without being cheesy.
Efdemin – Oh My God (Dial)
Label-mate of John Roberts and Panth Du Prince, Efdemin also works heavily with live instruments and classical techniques to create detailed, enthralling tracks that ebb and flow hypnotically across his two albums, both of which are essential listening.
Honourable mention to Floating Points for last year’s “Vacuum EP”
DUFFSTEP PODCAST/MIX
Posted by BRETTBig Up Podcast 33 – Duffstep by Duffstep
Shortly after posting one of Duffstep’s latest tracks it came to light that he also has a very solid mix doing the rounds in the shape of a podcast for San Francisco’s Big Up magazine. Featuring tracks from the likes of Lone, Pariah, Falty DL and many more Duffstep’s mix more than adequately shines a light on the steppy tech future sounds of now. Particularly tickling me sweet is the inclusion of ‘Pineapple Crush’ by Lone. Solidly referencing the first era of rave with it’s acid splashes and hip-house tinges ‘Pineapple Crush’ sits in this mix like it’s zesty name suggests it might – up front and attention seeking.
DUFFSTEP “CAN’T GIVE YOU LOVE”
Posted by BRETTDefinitely liking where this guy is heading with his sounds. Check this out, “Can’t give you love” is his latest Soundcloud offering and to date remains unsigned (not for long I imagine). With a slightly tougher edge than some of his more mellow peers on the techno-edged evolutionary path of Dubstep, you can almost feel the main room sweat dripping off this one. Close your eyes and pump it up. Trust me. This one’s got more Jack than the White Stripes.
