The original ‘G’ in Garage. No word of a lie, Grant’s production style in early-mid 90’s House was one of a few key sounds that veered off and became a foundation of Garage. Under a plethora of guises, Grant’s early years were hugely prolific, with the large proportion of his early classics coming through the Nice’n’Ripe stable. Now, being an avid fan and a continual follower of the mans work it would be easy to start spouting about his fundamental role in the development of Funky House in the late 90’s. But he’s got enough of a legacy to merit a part 2 further down the line where we talk about latter waves in his stylistic development. For now, let’s take it back to 1994 and jam a little to some serious underground House and Garage classics from a man who deserves a lot more than a nod.
As an introductory taster or for those that might have forgotten where it all started, we pulled a couple of classics in for your listening pleasure.
Ruff Diamondz have style, rhythm they have vibes that make you listen. Basically they’re for real. They’re got what you want and need. Aint no reason you should want the rest. What you see is what you get and nobody can’t do it like them.
This fresh trio have taken one of the hottest Hip-Hop tracks of all time and reworked it for a more distinct Urban Pop sound.
Fake, fake records…
TEED doesn’t fail to surprise each excellent release. This one is more addictive than before. ‘Household Goods’ is strong. The bass drops like some sort of Electro-tsunami and for those of you that loved Garden, the vocals follow on nicely.
Tracklist:
1. Household Goods
2. Waulking Song
3. How Far
4. Critisize (Bonus Track)

This revenge story features all the usual Grime film come movie stars; Ashley Thomas (Bashy), Adam Deacon and Kaya Scodelario from the Skins TV series. Set in a time not so long from now, 2015 to be precise, Junior fights the battles of everyday life in the socioeconomic disaster that is the London ghetto.
Do not miss the D Double E club scene, excellent animated dream sequences and various chases through the back streets of the city. This isn’t your usual Hollywood blockbuster but it doesn’t need to be. This is a simple story with some cutting edge British talent.

So, what’s all this about people getting high on music videos? I know, I know, crazy right? But I’m serious. Just yesterday I came across this article warning parents of a potential new ‘drug’ threat to teens. The warning specifically targeted a ‘dangerous’ trend amongst some web based thrill seekers. According to the article, which I later substantiated with a little read of this, Binaural Beats, as they are typically known, are composed pieces of music, well, more like sounds, that apparently have the ability to alter one’s brain chemistry. The combination of subtly differing sound waves channelled directly to the left and right aural passages has been experimented with since the 19th century when it was initially thought to have some neurological impact.
Of course, like most things, knowledge and ease of access have led to such experiences being made available for all online. With hundreds of thousands of hits on YouTube’s most popular Bin Beats there clearly exists a solid base of willing guinea pigs and experimentalists. And, as with every trend there is the trickle down so parents have a right to be concerned IF such content is proven to be damaging. With all this in mind – I have one question, is this just another drop of ammo for conservative parents desperate to lobby for tougher policing and restrictions of the interwebs or can you really get high on YouTube supply? Feel free to take a hit on this and let us if you manage to catch a taste of anything other than forty winks.
On an experimental tip, all you producers out there, how’s about channeling some of this theory into the backing of some serious dance floor fodder in an attempt to super vibes your listeners. Hell, you can have that one for free, just hit us up if you score some results!
Bless.

FACT Mix 163 – Lil Silva (Jul ’10)
The new Lil Silva release is an EP I can’t get enough of right now. I am a huge fan of Night Slugs and what Bok Bok and the boys have been doing over the last couple of years. With every release they drop I have a listen and can’t decide what it is I like about them, I put the tracks out of sight for a week and then revisit them just to be absolutely blown away! The new Lil Silva EP was no different, I didn’t get it immediately but ‘Gold To Get’ and ‘Pulse vs Flex’ are massive tunes and the full six tracks that are on ”Night Skanker’ are all worth a listen. BIG MIX, BIG RELEASE, these guys are taking over! Have a little listen to the tracks below and get out and buy a copy!!!!
PEACE&OUZO
I don’t care how old this is, Frisco riding over the UKG classic by Masterstepz ‘Melody’, is just too SICK! ‘I’m from N15 and ting, where nuff men bust M16 and ting…’ LOVE IT!
Tune of the day from me!
This one is from James Blake who didn’t even have a record out this time last year but I expect his name to be on everyone’s lips in 2010. Here is a clip from his latest EP which is out on Hessle Audio (a personal fave of mine), unfortunately, YouTube was the only place I could find it. Apologies if the quality isn’t great, have a listen!

I am in Copenhagen at the moment and I missed the last Deviation session with Mala, a long time hero of mine and someone I have been lucky enough to sit next to on a flight to Munich and hear him play a massive 4 hour set to 20 people (plus countless DMZ sets, of course). Obviously I was intrigued to hear about how it went down and stumbled across a nice little post regarding Mala’s last tune. It is an absolute banger and if the rest of the set was up to this standard, I definitely missed a huge night! Here it is, check it out.
